Evidence Unseen Concert

We will be having this concert during our youth group time on Wed. night. We will have fliers for you to hand out to your friends at school soon - pick them up at youth group next week (Sept. 9).

Fun Town - Splash Town

Calling all our Jr. Highers. This year's Fun Town trip will also include Splash Town. The trip is THIS THURSDAY! You must sign up and have a permission slip if you want to come.

Cost is 25.00 (check to Church of the Open Door).

Bring a swimsuit, towel, lunch (or $$ for lunch), and a little $$ for dinner at a fast food place on the way home.

Man Camp 2009

Join us for another manly man camping trip. This will be our 4th annual "Man Camp". Man Camp with Beyond Existence and Men Mentoring Men from Church of the Open Door is not like your typical youth group camping trip.

If your camping style involves a pop-up camper, a campground with a pool, bathroom with running water, showers, etc... then this is exactly the camping trip you need to come on. Join us as we leave ALL of that behind and enjoy God's creation without all the amenities of 21st century living. Enjoy the woods as God made it.

Each year at Man Camp we learn a new skill and make something to add to our outdoor gear list. Two years ago we all made survival kits. Last year we made soda can stoves that run on denatured alcohol.

This year we are adding a slight minimalist element to the trip by limiting your pack weight (35lbs, including shelter and cookset) and we will each build our own lightweight backpacking kitchen kit. You will receive a lightweight cook pot, stove, windscreen, pot stand, mug/bowl with insulator. You will be cooking your own meals on this trip - and we'll show you how to do so effectively and safely.

You will be required to attend the pre-trip "gear day" where we will build our cooksets and go over gear requirements and limitations (Thursday evening from 6-8pm, Aug. 20th)

And definitely don't forget your Bible. There's nothing better than spending some time in God's word and prayer in the morning, sitting on the edge of a lake or side of a mountain. Each morning we go our separate ways for 30-45 minutes to have personal devotions. This is always the highlight of any youth trip for me and I hope is the same for you.

Belize Mission: Meeting Apr. 5

Winter Retreat Update

Quick Info regarding Winter Retreat this weekend.
Mar. 6-8

Drop Off time: 3:00 PM at the Church on Friday.

Pick Up time: 4:00 PM at the Church on Sunday.

NOTE: Daylight Savings Time begins Sun. morning. Be sure to set your clocks ahead one hour in order to pick up your child at the appropriate time.

Packing List: Do not bring sleds or skates. Unfortunately there is no skating this year, and we will be able to use the sleds at Blueberry mountain so we don't have to pack our own. This will save a lot of space.

Sledding: Please be praying that God will have mercy on us this weekend, weather-wise. The weather currently calls for some snow Fri. morning, changing to rain through the afternoon and night. This may change some things about where and how much sledding we will get. Lord willing, we will get to use the long, lower hill. If that's not the case, I know that God's ways are better than mine, and we will have a blast regardless.

Snacks: If you can (or remember to), bring a snack to share while at camp. We will have an evening snack provided for us on Friday night, and Sat. night we will consume whatever everyone brings to share. I'm sure you'll be hungry after a long day of outdoor games.

Permission Slip: If you have not turned it in yet, be ABSOLUTELY sure you have your permission slip filled out and signed by your parent/guardian when you come on Friday. You will not be allowed to come without it.

Summer Missions: Belize

Belize City Adventure Service Expedition

I am so excited that this year we will be offering a foreign missions trip to the youth at Church of the Open Door. We will be going to Belize, just Southeast of Mexico in Central America. God used my first missions trip to completely change my life - I look forward to seeing how He will use this trip in the lives of our teens. Please be in prayer for this trip, for God to move in the hearts of the teens He wants to go, for soft hearts to be ready to receive all that He wants for us, for financial supply, health, great attitudes, unity, and that His Kingdom will be advanced. DESCRIPTION: This warm welcoming vacation hot-spot of Central America hosts the western hemisphere's "Great Barrier Reef" which draws divers, sailors, and beachcombers from all over the world. However, when you look further into the beautiful landscape of the mainland areas, you’ll see families in need of your love and care. This mission trip takes you to Belize City, where you'll complete a combination of service projects for the welcoming residents of this densely populated area. You'll complete much needed minor home-repair projects for residents and perform a variety of community services. Your service week will culminate in a huge block party celebration for everyone involved in the neighborhoods where you shared God's love all week. But that's really only the beginning—the local churches you’ll work with will continue the service, using your efforts as a springboard to reach the men, women, and children of Belize City.

There will be 150 teens and youth leaders participating in this missions project. Each evening, everyone will gather for a time of intimate, interactive, God-centered worship and devotional time. Programs are developed by experts in group ministry and coordinated by a staff member. They are an integral part of the mission trip experience designed to pull together the spiritual aspects of your time in service to others.

TEENS AND PARENTS: If you are interested in this mission trip, you must contact me (Scott L.) right away. You will need to fill out a short application and get it back to me by March 11. This is the deadline for joining this trip. Take the week to pray and talk it over with your family. Once we know who all is going, there will be an informational meeting scheduled to go over details. All students participating will be expected to attend all team meetings.

SUPPORT: Everyone coming on this trip will need to raise $1600.00. Of that, 50% will be due by May 15th, with the remainder due on June 15th. I want to encourage you to step out in faith - you will be amazed at God's provision as He shows you how mighty He is to provide your needs. We will work together to send out support letters, as well as work together on a couple fund raisers.

Talent Show Update

Come on out and enjoy a night of wonder, amazement, and mostly laughs at Church of the Open Door's annual Talent Show. We have acts done by kids and adults, from the serious to the silly, from juggling to skits to illusions and worship. This year is not likely to disappoint.

NOTE: We will have snacks, coffee, hot cocoa and tea (feel free to bring some snacks to share, they will be served at a table by our youth). There is absolutely no charge - but IF anyone is so inclined, we will have baskets set out for donations which will ALL go towards sponsoring students to our Winter Youth Retreat.

Winter Retreat 2009

Winter Retreat has been scheduled at Blueberry Mountain and plans are already underway. If you would like to come this year, we will have a sign up sheet at Youth Group this Wed. night and at Church on Sunday. Permission slips are on the table in the foyer. I'm looking forward to a great weekend away with you all as we eat, play, sled, relax, and spend time alone with God. This retreat has always been a great getaway for me in leaving the business of everyday life back home and having a fresh connection with our Savior.

I hope you are planning to come.

The cost is $90.00 (same as last year). This covers all your food, lodging, travel, and sledding fees. Please have half the cost in as a deposit by Feb. 18th. Pray that the snow sticks around on Blueberry Mountain so we can enjoy the mile long sledding hill this year. Also, new this year (pending proper weather), snow volleyball.

Snow Snow Snow

Hey everyone,
Channel 5 is calling for 8-12 inches in Bangor, and 12-20 inches just north of Bangor. It's already begun, so I'm afraid I am going to cancel youth group tonight. I know, I know, that's like 12 times in 3 weeks, I'm saddened about it too.

However, there is one possible good outcome. With as much snow as we've been getting, there is a much higher probability that it will hold out and give us great sledding at Winter Retreat. Speaking of which - Winter Retreat is going to be at Blueberry Mountain in Weld again this year. Mark your calendars for the first weekend in March (6th-8th). The cost will be the same as last year, $90.00. I was going to get you all permission slips at youth group, but since it's canceled tonight, you'll have to wait until Sunday or next Wed. night. Or, if you want one emailed to you, send me an email asking for it.

Also, I'm toying with the idea of getting a group of us to go sledding at Essex St. Hill this Saturday - I'll let you know asap if it works out. The van only holds 15, so it would be a first come - first serve on a ride from church, others would have to get rides or drive themselves.

Well, another snow day, another cancellation. Hampden students got to go home early today, at least that's something. :)

So, no youth group tonight. Pray for no snow next Wed. It's been way too long since we've met for youth group. Esther and I are talking about coming up with a possible alternative for these times when we have to cancel Wed. nights. Maybe you have some ideas yourself.

Christmas Gift Update

Thank you all so much for your participation in this years Christmas Parties and "Give a Gift - Change a Life" with World Vision.

This year, because of your sacrifice to skip spending money on a Yankee swap gift and instead donate what you would have spent we were able to give 5 ducks and a goat to a family in need. This will give them both milk and eggs to eat and sell to make a living, to buy medicine and send their kids to school. Plus, hatched ducklings can increase their supply or be sold as well.

I'm so proud of you all. Please be praying for the family or families that will receive these gifts from you - for their health and safety, and most that they will know the One, True, and Living God. This gift not only supplies them with tangible needs, but gives those involved an opportunity to share Jesus Christ with the families.

We will have a time of singing, a short message, and candle lighting as we worship Jesus who gave up His rights to be born in a manger; to become one of us so that one day we could become children of God.

This coming Sunday, Dec. 28th, 2008 is going to be done completely by youth group students with some backup from a few of us youth ministers. Our morning Service is at 9:30 AM. If Church of the Open Door is not your Sunday place of worship, I want you to know that you are more than welcome to join us for this special Sunday service (not that you'd be unwelcome at any other time... :). Please be in prayer for the worship team (Nate, Blake, Amber, Katie, Steve, Allison, Brian) and those giving messages (Amber, Hope, Andrew, and myself) as well as our ushers and greeters (Michael, Jordan, Taylor, Jon), prayer (Kevin), etc. This is the first time we've done the whole service on a Sunday Morning and I am really excited about it.

The following Wed. night is New Years Eve. There will not be a normal youth group meeting, but we are hosting a family game night as we always do on New Years Eve, it will begin at 7:00PM. If you want to come, feel free to bring food and games, and take a nap during the day. :)

Snow and Youth Group

I don't know why I haven't seen half-day cancellations yet, but it's snowing pretty good where I am. Unless things get significantly better we will not be having Youth Group tonight. I know that's a bummer, but I would rather err on the side of caution, especially when it involves you guys and girls driving on slippery roads.

Youth Group Christmas Party 2008

0$ Yankee Swap - Group Gift
Bring a wrapped gift - it can be funny, festive, or flamboyant... BUT... you cannot spend any money on it. You can find, make, or re-gift, but do not spend money. Make sure it is wrapped anonymously.

Instead, only if you can, bring what you would have spent on the Yankee swap gift to the party as a donation. As a group, through World Vision we will give to a family in need. Last year we were able to give two goats and 10 chickens to families in need. What a joy it is for our youth to give up a small personal gain to serve and give to others.

Jr. High party:
December 12th, 6:15-8:45pm. You may either meet at Kevin and Wendy Smith's, or if you need a ride, the van will leave the church at 6:00pm sharp and return at 9:00pm. Contact Scott or Kevin if you want to take the van over or need directions.

Sr. High Party:
December 13th, 6:30-9:30pm. Meet and get picked up at the Mark and Laurie Fowler's. Contact Scott or the Fowler's if you need directions.

Food:

Christian College Fair

There will be over 30 colleges present and workshops on financial aid and scholarship search. If you wanted to come on our College Trip the other week, but for whatever reason were unable to, this is a great opportunity to see what these Colleges and Universities have to offer. If you did to on the College Trip, you'll have a good idea of what to look for and ask about, so you should check this out too!

Day of Silent Solidarity

Since January 22, 1973 over 50,000,000 babies have had their voices silenced through surgical abortion in this nation alone.
Over 4,000 children have their lives taken each day in the name of choice.

Over 4,000 women are emotionally damaged every day.

On October 21st, people from all over this nation will give up their voices for a day in solidarity for these children. Red arm bands and duct tape will identify them as taking part in the Pro-life Day of Silent Solidarity. They will carry fliers explaining why they are silent and educate others about the plight of the innocent children we are losing every day.

We've participated in this for two years now. I want to encourage you to take a stand. Take a stand for those innocents who cannot stand for themselves. Be silent in support of those who cannot speak out. If you would like to take part in the Pro-Life Day of Silent Solidarity, let us know. If you need help getting fliers, let us know. Be a voice by giving up yours for a day.

This is an excellent opportunity for you to show your love for God's creation and the importance He puts on people and life. Use this at your school as a witness. I look forward to hearing your stories after the event.

Schedule Changes

Monday, Aug. 18th - No Youth Group

Monday, Aug. 25th - Last Monday, Moving to Wed. Kick off - Meet at Church at 6:00. Wear clothes for playing outside and bring some money for food (or just mooch off friends). After a short time here we will drive over to Dorothea Dix Park for some games, then end at Dysart's Truck Stop for food. You will need to be picked up at Dysart's at 8:30 PM.
(Dysart's is off the Cold Brook Road, use the Hampden exit off the I95).

Wednesday, Aug. 27th - First Wed. Night Youth Group. From here on out, youth grop will be Wed. nights. And the times have changed slightly. Youth Group will now run from 6:30 - 8:30 PM. The Men's and Women's ministry goes for the same time frame, so Parents - we would love to have you check these ministries out.

September 11-16 - College Trip. Ages 16 - 18. More information to follow, but we plan to hit Christian colleges from here to Penn. during that Trip. Last time we went to Gordon College, Eastern University, Pennsylvania Biblical University, and Lancaster Bible College. There will be some changes to that list, depending on who comes and where their interests lie. There will be a deadline coming for registration, so start talking to your parents about it now. We will send out more specific information as soon as we can.

Changes At Church and Youth Group

I have sent a letter home with those of you who made it to Youth Group on Monday, Aug. 11th - but I know that not everyone was here. This is most of what the letter contained:

There are some significant and exciting changes going on here at Church of the Open Door that I want to let you know about. I believe these changes will positively effect our Youth Group and hopefully your family also.

Beginning August 27^th, 2008, our “target audience” ministries will all be moving to Wednesday nights. This includes our Beyond Existence Youth Group, as well as the Men Mentoring Men group and the Women Mentoring Women group. The leadership at Open Door, including myself, believes this is an important step for the following reasons:

With the upcoming heating season approaching, having the groups meet on the same night will reduce our energy consumption.
Having these three ministries on the same night will make it easier for parents of youth group members to participate in the men's or women's ministry. We see this as not only saving you driving time and gas money, but also a more family oriented approach to ministries – where you participate on the same night.
We will soon be starting a church-wide small groups ministry, so we wanted to free up as many nights as possible. Having these ministries on just one night, as “electives”, if you will, allows your family more flexibility to find a small group night that will work for you.
For our students who go to Christian schools in the area, Wednesday nights work best. These schools do not give homework on Wednesdays, and they also cut their sports practices early. I know that this will not help public school students... (good luck convincing your principal that there should not be homework on Wednesdays. :)

I know that this move to Wednesday will not be easy for everyone. When we moved youth group to Monday Nights a few years back I know that it was difficult for some students, while the move made it easier for others. I don't expect this move to be any different. It is my prayer and hope that you will be able to make this transition and join us on Wednesday nights.

If there is just no way that moving to Wed. night is going to work for you, please please please find a youth group at a good, Bible believing and teaching church that meets on a night you can attend. If you need help with that, I would be more than happy to recommend some places for you. However, it is my desire that you will be able to rearrange your schedule to meet with us on Wednesdays.

I am very excited about what God has been doing here at Church of the Open Door. We expanded our sanctuary area and have just gone to a single morning service on Sundays, it is exciting to see everyone together now! The service has moved to 9:00am, followed by a time of food and fellowship (Sunday School will follow in the Fall). I would love to see you there. We have also called Bruce Johnson as our Outreach and Connecting Pastor to serve the body of Christ alongside our Senior Pastor Mark Fowler and myself (as Pastor to Students). Please let any of us know if there is something we can do for you.

On a more personal note, I just want you to know that it has been a joy for my wife and I to minister to your child. We believe very strongly that having a time for youth to meet together for worship, for the study of God's Word, for fellowship, and for opportunities to serve and reach out to others, is crucial. We have certainly not “arrived”, and we will never be perfect, this side of heaven, but this is our goal, as Paul states in Philippians 3:12-14 ...

“Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me His own ... this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”

Bar Harbor Trip Postponed

I'm afraid we're going to postpone the Bar Harbor Trip. It was going to be a day of being outdoors all day, and since the weather is supposed to be like today, cool, rainy, and also a thundershower mixed in, we thought climbing and swimming and walking around town would have to wait for a better day. We will let you know as soon as we have a new date for it.

Sorry, I know many of you were really looking forward to it. I hope you can make it on the new date, whenever that will be.

Bar Harbor Day Trip

There will be a sign up sheet next week at youth group. Make sure you are signed up if you want to come (so we can arrange enough transportation). If you can't make it, see me on Sunday or call/email to sign up.

The Plan: We will probably do a short hike (maybe Bubble Rock), then spend the afternoon at Sand Beach. We'll end the day by going into town, bring money if you want to shop a bit, and also for buying dinner.

Bag lunch (pack it for carrying up a short hike).

Men - here is your packing list, in case you don't have it already:

Remember, pack light. We have limited space, and you will have to carry it in to the campsite, along with all the communal gear we have. You may ONLY bring ONE PACK, along with your sleeping gear. I recommend a pack you wouldn't mind taking up the mountain so you have your hands free - there is a very steep incline near the top.

We will be hiking Big Moose (or Big Squaw) Mountain. This is not required, some will stay back at the campsite and get a little R&R. There is also a nice level hike around the two ponds to check out as well if you stay back.

Man Camp Scouting

Hey gang - Steve B. and I scouted out our Man Camp location. Good news - it looks great! We will be able to drive very close to the campsite, but not all the way there (expect approx. 2/5ths of a mile walk on a forest trail with all our gear). The sites are "first come, first serve", so please be praying that we will get a good spot.

There are some nice trails around the area, as well as a good hike to the top of Big Squaw Mountain for those of you ready for a sturdy hike (and Pete will show us some Orienteering skills as we try and find some "geocache's" along the way).

Remember: PACK LIGHT. You will have to carry all your stuff in, and out. As well as all the communal gear we will need.

Moderately rugged outdoor camping for the manly types at Big Squaw Mountain near Greenville – July 11^th, 12^th, and the 13^th, 2008. Amenities include: Trees, dirt, water, rocks, mosquitos, and blackflies.

This trip is for male students grades 6-12 and Adult men willing to share their expertise in the Maine wilderness.

Come learn how to camp and survive in the wild. Last year we built survival kits. This year our project will be building ultralight backpacking stoves.

Cost: $15.00 for students / $5.00 for adults willing to help with supervision and training.

Permission slips w/ packing list and times are available by the sign up sheet in the foyer at Church. Please sign up by July 7th.

Fun Town - Jr. High

Greetings Jr. High!

It's time to start planning for the "annual" Jr. High Fun Town Trip. We will be going to Fun Town on Saturday, June 28th and you're invited. (This includes students who have just graduated from 8th grade and newcomers to youth group who have just graduated 5th grade)

If you would like to come with us, you MUST sign up in advance so that we can make sure we have enough room in vehicles for everyone. You may email me back to let me know, or sign up on the sign up sheet in the foyer at Church. There will be permission slips under the sign up.

The cost for this event will be $22.00 to cover your tickets and travel expenses (If I can get us a group rate that is, otherwise just the ticket is $26.00 - for now though, count on the $22.00). If you can't come up with all of that, please speak to me - don't let the cost stop you from coming. This will be due on the day of our trip, but earlier is better.

You will also need to bring a lunch -or- enough money to buy lunch (just remember that food is expensive at parks like this). We will have a large cooler to put your lunches in to keep them cool.

Paintball Trip

It's time to gear up for the 4th annual Paintball trip.

This trip is for Jr. High and Sr. High AND Adults are welcome.
(Younger than Jr. High are more than welcome, but must be accompanied by a parent)

Remember: If under 18, you MUST have Flying Dutchman's release form signed by your parent/guardian - or you WILL NOT be able to play. You can get a release form at church or print one off from their website here.

DATE: June 7th

TIME: Leave 8:00 am
Return 5:00 pm

COST: (We are not collecting money for this event, you will need to bring what you need with you and pay individually at Flying Dutchman's.)

Field Fee: $10.00
Paintballs: $3.50 per 100
Equipment Rental Standard: $10.00 -or-
Equipment Rental Tournament Level: $15.00

I recommend between 400 and 600 paintballs for the day, which would be $14.00 - 21.00. You are not allowed to bring your own paintballs.

Easy Breakdown:
- Minimalist: $34.00 (field fee, standard rental, 400 paintballs)
- Overkill: $46.00 (field fee, tournament rental, 600 paintballs)

If you have your own paintball gun, you can save some money as you won't need to rent one. If you bring your own, make sure you have a mask, and extra money to pay for CO2 or compressed air ($3.00 - 6.00 for a fill, depending on the size).

LUNCH: BRING YOUR OWN LUNCH!!! We will have a couple coolers to pack them in. I recommend you bring a bit more than your normal lunch, as "shooting" your friends can be hungry work. Also, we will stop for ice cream on the way back, so if you want to get anything, bring some extra $$ for it, and make sure you don't spend it on more paintballs.

Also, most importantly, bring WATER!!! We will have a sports cooler full of water, but you NEED to bring a water bottle.

CLOTHES: Wear woodsy clothes, darks or camouflage (light colors are very visible - a.k.a. - you're an easy target) - this is an outdoors field. Wear long pants and bring long sleeves. Wear boots or rugged sneakers with good tread. Don't dress too heavily, this is our warmer time of year and we don't want you to overheat. (Remember, this is Maine. Dress in layers).

Here are a few of the things we currently have planned for the summer:

May 31: Yard Sale. The Jr. High are running a yard sale to raise money for the "Send a Kid to Camp" fund.

June 7: Paintball trip. This is actually open to the whole church, not just Jr. and Sr. High.

June 28: Fun Town Trip. Jr. High only (those who have not yet started 9th grade are still eligible)

July 11-13: Man Camp. Jr. and Sr. High, boys only. We camp out at Little Wilson Falls.

July 11-12: Girly Thingy. I've no clue what's going on, talk to Esther.

July 21-25: Vacation Bible School. I really would like to see all of you serve by helping run VBS this year.

30 Hour Famine Report

First - I want to say thank you for your effort to save children's lives!

Second - Here's the scoop for the weekend:

1. Your "last meal" should be lunch, finishing at 12:30pm.

2. Meet at the church at 7:00pm.

3. Bring the $$ that you raised to save children's lives!

4. Bring your Bible, and a notebook/journal.

5. Bring a backpack with the stuff you need for overnight - clothes, toiletries, etc.

6. Bring a sleeping bag, pillow, sleeping mat.

7. Have your parents come to the church on Saturday at 6:15 with your favorite meal, enough to share. We will have a nice big pot-luck to "break - fast" together at 6:30pm.

30 Hour Famine

We are participating in the 30 Hour Famine again this year, raising funds to feed starving children throughout the world.

Every $1 raised feeds 1 child for a day. Think about how much you spend on one meal! Join us on May 9th-10th as we go without food for 30 hours to raise money (and awareness) to feed kids who have none.

Did you know that more than 29,000 children die every day from the effects of starvation? Every day. That's 20 children dying, every minute... of every day... of every week... of every year. I don't believe that's acceptable.

With the 30 Hour Famine we put our faith in action. If you are an adult reading this, I want to encourage you to sponsor one of our students for the 30 Hour Famine. If you are a student, I want to encourage you to participate. Together, let's make a dent in the starvation statistics, and save some lives!!!

Winter Retreat Update

Snow Campers and Winter Retreaters ! ! !

I just wanted to get you a little updated information about the retreat this weekend.

Meet at the Church at 3:30pm on Friday.
We return at 4:00pm on Sunday.

We will have you call home on the way back if we're running early or late.

The pond is unusable this year, so do not bring Ice Skates.

Do not bring any electronics.

Don't forget your Bible, notebook/journal, pen.

Be sure to bring a great attitude!

You'll be sleeping in heated dorms with bunk beds. Don't forget sleeping a bag/pillow. And I recommend ear plugs if you want to get some sleep.

Currently, the sledding hill is in good condition. If it is too warm this week, and there is too much rain, it may become unusable. If that is the case, don't worry, we have backup games at the ready. (Do not bring sleds, they will be provided there).

It is going to be a cold, wet, and very windy weekend. Be sure you bring outdoor clothes that are ready for that sort of weather - many of our activities on Saturday are outside.

Come with an attitude of expectation - expect God to do great things in your heart this weekend. Expect to have a lot of fun this weekend. Expect to get very little sleep. Expect to be crazy tired by Sunday afternoon.

I'm looking forward to seeing you all at Winter Retreat and I am excited for what God wants to do.

For those of you interested in the topic of abortion, this is for you:

Tough Questions Series - I Went To Pray at an Abortion Clinic and People Were Screaming and Yelling. How Should We Reach Out To Women Considering Abortion?

I am often asked what people should say to a woman who is considering abortion. I wish there was a magic answer that I could give that would help change the mind of every woman thinking about aborting their baby, but there is not.

When answering this question you also have to address what not to say. I have stood outside abortion mills for over 13 years praying, protesting, and have even been arrested many times for praying in front of the doors. I have watched thousands of women walk into abortion mills and have seen many different approaches by pro-lifers trying to save the babies.

The first mistake I see is anger. Pro-lifers can become so angry about abortion that they sometimes take it out on the women and just scare them right into the abortion mill. I have heard people call women murderers, whores, Jezebels, devil worshipers, and so much more. I have seen anti-abortion protesters so angry that they actually spit while they scream at people. I have never once seen this kind of behavior convince a women to stop and talk and change her mind.

I will admit that in the early years I used to scream and wave signs in people's faces. I let the frustration get to me as I watched these many young girls being taken into the abortion mill by their parents or boyfriends. I would see the boyfriends leave and go to get food, sit in the parking lot and eat and smoke while their child was being killed inside that building. I let the frustration get to me and began to rely on myself for results instead of relying on God.

I want to make it clear that not all people that go to abortion mills to minister and pray act like this. We at Stand True highly encourage people to go to the abortion mills for prayer and witnessing. There are highly effective ways of reaching women and helping them to make the right decision.

When a woman is going to an abortion mill she is usually scared and frustrated. She believes there is no other option for her other than abortion and there is no one to help her. These girls do not need someone yelling at them and telling them how evil they are, they need someone to love them and let them know how precious they are in God's eyes. They need someone to address their needs, not just the baby's needs. They need someone to approach them in the same way Christ would approach someone who was hurting and scared and about to make a huge mistake.

The first thing we tell people if they are going to try to talk to girls entering abortion mills is to not be holding a sign or wearing pro-life messages on their shirts. You should be dressed very friendly so you won't immediately scare the women away. We believe the first words to a woman entering the mill should be geared towards her and how she is doing, not just about the baby. Let her know you care about her.

The most powerful thing you can do when going to the abortion mill is pray. There is nothing more effective than prayer. When we go to our local abortion mill we spend the first hour as a group reading the Bible out loud, not shouting, but just reading out loud the Word of God. We then walk around the building praying for the women, the doctor, the nurses, the escorts, and everyone involved. We also look for opportunities to witness and share, not only with the women going in, but with the escorts and whoever is around. Not calling them names or condemning them to hell, but sharing Christ's love with them.

These ideas and principles are not just for the abortion mill, but for our everyday life when we run into situations like this. I recently read an article about a young girl at a Catholic school who got pregnant and was told she could not walk the stage at her graduation, while the young man was allowed to. Not only was this total hypocrisy, but it was a dangerous way to treat this young girl. It is exactly that kind of reaction and treatment of girls that drive them to abortion.

Our words, especially our first words to a girl who gets pregnant can determine the path she takes and be the difference between life and death. As a father of three daughters I do wonder how I would react if one of my daughters came home one day and told me she was pregnant. What would I say? Would I blow up and lose my temper? Or would I love her no matter what mistake she made?

When we go to God in prayer and confess our sins, do you think He screams and yells and has a huge fit? I don't think so. Do you think he yells at us and tells us how horrible we are, and how much of a disgrace we are to the family? I don't think so. When we go to Him, He is faithful to love and forgive us. I pray that I never have to go through this with my daughters, but if I do, I pray that my first words to her are those of love.

Yes, we do believe that abortion is the act of killing a human person and can never be permitted. Yes, we believe that abortion is a sin and is detestable in God's eyes. Yes, we believe that we need to stand up against this evil and be there to try to help people from making such a tragic and horrific mistake. But more importantly than all of that, we believe those people need Christ and we need to love them as Christ would.

Winter Retreat

I only have some preliminary information set, but here it is: We'll be at Blueberry Mountain Bible Conference Center this year, in Weld, ME. March 7-9th. Cost will be $90.00 (if that's out of range for you, there will be some sponsorship money available - DO NOT let the cost stop you). Two days, three nights. This is the biggest event of the school year that we do, so I hope you all can come. It has always been very rewarding, just ask anyone who's gone before. This year's theme is on being a Counter Culture Christian.

Christmas Giving

Each year we like to do a Yankee Swap during the Christmas Party. It's a lot of fun and sure to get laughs. For those who don't know, a Yankee Swap is where everyone brings 1 wrapped gift to place under the tree for the party, then we all draw numbers. We take turns, starting with #1, picking a gift and opening it. The next person gets to pick a gift or swap with anyone else who has opened a gift already. Then at the end, #1 gets to make one final swap. (It's good to be either a really high number, or #1).

This year our Yankee Swap is changed a bit. We're still going to do it, but we want to help some people who are less fortunate than us this Christmas. So your Yankee Swap gift MUST be either made or found, it cannot cost anything. It can be funny or serious (but no trash, please - I recommend rummaging around your room - or even better, clean your room and you'll definitely find something).

But, here's were it gets good - bring the $$ you would have spent on a Yankee Swap gift to the party (usually $5-10) - we're going to put it all together and choose something to get to help a family or village in another country (a goat, chickens, etc.).

Pro-Life Movie

Word on the street is that this movie is higher quality than many "Christian" films. Pray for the impact this film may have, and promote it to your friends. It's so hard to see that so many people will sacrifice a human life on the alter of convenience. I'm pro-life because I believe that every child, no matter to whom he or she is conceived, is made in the image of God and therefore has incredible value and a right to life.

This is not your typical cheesy Christian movie. They do not get the point across with preaching and judgment. The movie shows how the love of God and family can change the world. This movie shows us how we can love someone and share the hope of Christ with out shoving religion down their throats. This movie embodies love like almost no other movie I have seen. - Stand True

And here comes the rant...

Is it too much to ask that we don't shove scissors into the back of a baby's skull and vacuum out his brain? Should the child pay that ultimate price for the parents sin? And yet, it's often the same group that is against the death penalty, doing the same, albeit in a much less gruesome way, on those whose crimes against humanity are so horrid that death becomes deserved. Unknowingly, their mantra is "Kill the innocent, Free the Killers" Not a camp I want to find myself in.
As my friend Enoch would say: "Isn't it rather hypocritical to favor abortion after you've already been born?"

CHANGE OF DATE FOR HARVEST PARTY

The Harvest Party was originally scheduled for Friday evening, 4-9:30pm. Due to reports of rain all day, we're moving it ahead one day to Saturday. Same times, same places, different day.

We will have hotdogs (and the fixings) as well as marshmallows to roast at the bonfire at Kevin's. Plan on a late dinner. Please bring some food to share if you can (drinks, cookies, chips, veggies, etc.). Also, bring $6.00 to cover the corn maze (I'm quite sure it's less, but just to be safe).

Saturday, Oct. 13th.

9:00-9:30pm Pick up at Kevin house in Carmel

Help with Evangelism

We've been asked by the evangelism ministry to help with the Alpha outreach by providing the dinner on Thursday, Oct. 18th. I hope you will set that evening aside on your calendar and come out to the church to be a part of sharing the love and truth of Jesus to those seeking God.

We have to have dinner all ready by 6:00pm, so plan to show up between 4:30-5:00pm. We need greeters, people to set tables, help cook, serve, and clean up. If you can't be here for the whole thing, I'd love for you to come for whichever part of the evening you can. We should be all wrapped up by 8-8:30pm.

No Youth Group Oct. 8

Also, don't forget about the Harvest Party on October 12th. I hope you can come. There will be a sign up sheet at Church this Sunday with permission slips. The Permission Slip has all the information about the trip, as well as directions on how to get to Treworgy Family Orchards and to Kevin's House. Be sure to let me know if you are coming so we have enough transportation to get you from Treworgy's to Kevin's.

Harvest Party

Where: Treworgy Family Orchards and Kevin Smith’s house in Carmel

What: Youth group party with hayride, corn maze, cookout, bonfire. We will have hotdogs to roast at the fire. Students are encouraged to bring something to share (chips, drink, cookies, etc.).

Bring: $6.00 for corn maze. Food to share. A jacket and sweater, it’s getting cold.

Church Work Day

Come on out to church on Saturday Morning, Sept. 29th and help out as we finish up the yardwork. We will be spreading loam (dirt) around the edges of the new pavement to keep it from falling apart and removing rocks and a small tree so the tall grassy area can be mowed.

Guys - come early for the monthly Men's breakfast (every last Saturday of the month, 7:30am). We'll probably be underway with the work by 9:00am, so if you cant make the breakfast (or if you're a girl - sorry, no girls for the Men's breakfast), come at 9:00 in your work clothes.

If you're in High School, I definitely recommend heading down to Bangor Christian School this Sept. 25th to check out colleges. I'll be there, my brother-in-law is a representative for Eastern University and should be there (look for a guy with a strong splash of Puerto Rica in his blood and say "hey Figs").

Also - I don't recommend leaving a vehicle at church on Monday or Tuesday. We are having the new parking lot paved, and the old one repaved, so unless you want your car under 3inches of pavement, park on the street if you do stop by.

Rugged outdoor camping for the manly types at Little Wilson Falls - August 17, 18, and 19, 2007.

This trip is for both students grades 6-12 and Adult men willing to share their expertise in the Main wilderness.

Come learn how to camp and survive in the wild. Each student will receive a small Wilderness survival kit and learn how to use it. Trainings will include:

§ How to build a fire safely (and how to put it out properly) - pending fire permit

§ Cooking in the wild (no electricity) - pending fire permit

§ How to increase your chances of survival if you are lost in the woods

§ How to be found or find others if you are lost in the woods

Summer Missions Trip

As many of you know, we are gearing up for our youth Missions trip this summer (July 22-28). There are five of us going to New York to serve alongside nearly 200 other students from Youth Groups around the country. I know that God is going to use us as we flood the area with His good news, serving those in need and having daily devotions with the people we are serving.

Please be in prayer for all of us [Esther and I, Kelsey, Becca, and Nate]. Pray that God would raise all of the needed funds. That the hearts of the people we go to serve and minister to will be softened and receptive to Jesus, that we would bond with the other students we go to serve alongside, for safe travel, and that our hearts would be receptive to what God wants to say to us during this trip.

3rd Annual Paintball Trip

It's still over a month off, but start preparing for our 3rd Annual Paintball trip. This year's trip is going to be a bit upgraded from previous years - with overnight camping on a river, about 10 minutes from where we will play paintball.

This is real camping - no amenities - including showers.

Packing List:
Paintball Clothes (camo or dark colors recommended, no shorts)
Paintball gear (if you have any and don't want to rent)
Sleeping Bag, Pad, Pillow
Toiletries (toothbrush, deodorant)

Costs: (Do not allow this to stop you, we will try to help out any way we can)
Attendance - $7.00 (this will help cover the camping costs, mostly for food)
Paintball Field Fee $10.00
Paintball Gun Rental $10.00-15.00 (Pro-Lite or Automag)
Paintballs $3.50/100 (400 paintballs is average for all day)

Registration will begin in June. You only need to pay the Camping Attendance fee beforehand. See Scott to sign up.

Send a Kid to Camp Update

We have an Awesome God! And He used you Junior Highers to do some great work. Between donations, collecting bottles, and the yard sale - you raised $830.00 to help send kids to Christian Summer Camps.

Jr. High Yard Sale - Sr. High Work Day

Saturday, May 12 8:00am - 2:00pm

The Jr. High youth are hosting a Yard Sale at Church of the Open Door in order to raise money for their "Send a Kid to Camp" fund.

If you have anything you could donate towards the yard sale, please contact Kevin or Scott, or leave it in a box in the garage at Church with a note saying it is for the yard sale. We will also be collecting bottles, so this will be a great day to drop them off if you've been saving up.

Finish the Youth Room Work Day 8:00am - 2:00pm

This will also be our "finish up the youth room" project day as well. This is for you in Sr. High who can come to the church to help finish the couches and other small projects. We may also do a little vision casting for what we want to see come out of the Beyond Existence Youth Ministry, so please, come spend the day with us.

BBQ for Lunch!!

We'll bring a grill and fire up some hamburgers and hotdogs. If you want to bring anything to go along (salad, chips, deserts), by all means, please do!

Summer Missions Trip

Mission Description:

Hailed as one of the most beautiful areas in the state of New York, Tioga County is easily a place where a person could imagine angels live. And indeed, among the rolling hills, historic homes, quaint shops, and riverside restaurants – you can be an angel to people in need. You'll work on homes of the elderly and impoverished ... restoring them to a beauty that matches the rest of the scenery. By painting and performing minor carpentry repairs, you'll be protecting someone from the ill-effects of weather and keeping them safer in their home. You'll be an angel of hope to these precious people.

Information:

This trip is for Sr. High students only – which includes students going into 9th grade this coming fall and those who graduate this spring.

This years mission trip will be a unique opportunity for you to grow spiritually as you serve others in Christ's name. You will also grow as you meet and work alongside students your age from all over the country.

I encourage you to prayerfully consider participating in this mission project as an avenue to put your faith into practice.

Send a Kid to Camp

Our Jr. High youth group is raising money to help kids go to Summer Camp. It's already well into Spring so time is becoming a factor. Here are some ways you can help:

1. Drop off your returnable bottles at the Church (side entrance under the coat rack), or contact Kevin if you have a large amount and need them picked up.

2. Pray that God will move obstacles out of the way for those kids who want to go to a Christian summer camp this summer.

3. Make a donation. Checks should be made out to Church of the Open Door with a note in the memo area saying: "Send a kid to camp."

4. Donate items for the yard sale the Jr. High will put on (date will be posted as soon as we have it).

If you know of a student interested in camp and are in need of support please contact Scott at the church.

April 16th Dysarts Run

Come to Youth Group this Monday night with an appetite. After a short worship and teaching time together at the church, we will all head over to Dysart's Truck Stop for the rest of the evening.

If you want to get some food, bring some money (or just "mooch" off your friends). For those of you with a need for Ice Cream, I recommend pitching in with some friends together for the famous "18 Wheeler". Good luck finishing it off.

Also, don't forget, this is a "tipping" situation - so plan on that. We don't want to leave a "Christians are bad tippers" aftertaste. And trust me, I know you guys... our waitresses will earn every cent of their tip.

PARENTS: Drop your student off at the Church. The Youth Leaders will transport everyone over to Dysart's in Leader vehicles and the Church Van. Please plan on picking your student up BY 8:30pm AT Dysart's.

DIRECTIONS: From Bangor, take I95s to the Hampden Exit (Coldbrook Road). Turn Right onto Coldbrook Road, Left at the lights and you'll see Dysarts on your Left. (You can see it from the I95 exit).

Gone for the Weekend

Your youth leaders are taking off for the weekend. We're all going to a youth ministry conference/training in Boston. It's kind of like a youth retreat, but for us.
